5 Ways to Make 2016 Your Best Year Yet

For those of us who make New Year’s resolutions, it’s said that less than 10% of us are successful in achieving or maintaining those resolutions.  We’ve created a short list to help you get started on making 2016 your most fulfilling and prosperous year yet.

It sounds cliché, but if you write down your goals for this year AND how you are going to reach those goals, you are more likely to find success.

You are even more likely to stay on track to those resolutions or goals if you check-in once a month or once every couple of weeks and write down how things have been going and how you are going to move forward.

Try writing down what you are going to accomplish this month and then have your longer term goals on the right side of your page to keep you on track.  Remember that change doesn't happen over night and it is the choices you make everyday that will lead you to your long term dreams.  Buy a cool journal that you can take Instagram worthy photos of and you will be one step closer to your success.

1. Travel to AT LEAST one new place that you’ve never been before.

So many of us want to see the world and travel.  So why not make it happen? Whether it’s a 2 hour drive or an 8 hour plane ride, find somewhere and go!

Travel is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer.  Buy experiences, not things.

2. Start treating your body like the marvelous, biologicial temple that it is.

The cells of your body are made up of the food you eat.  For a sharp brain, glowing skin and an abundance of energy, eat the most lively foods- those that come from the Earth!  We are constantly seeking remedies for stomach aches, dull skin and foggy brains.  Why do we not link the way we feel to the very fuel we put into our bodies?

Do NOT fall for some kind of quick fix or fad diet.  You did not get to where you are overnight and you are not going to get to where you want to be overnight, or in 21 days, or whatever the latests diet trends say.  Whether you are trying to lose weight or just feel better, we will give you the secret to weight loss and health in one sentence: Eat more whole, real food that comes from the Earth.  It’s that easy.  Don’t think about what you shouldn’t eat, but rather eat more good food!  Make health part of your lifestyle, not just a phase.

Also, we know you’re busy, but everyone's busy.  Being “too busy” is not a good excuse to treat your body poorly and eat crappy food.  When you take care of our body and you take care about what you put into it, you will feel better, look better and do better at all the things you are so busy with.  Make a goal to prepare at least one, whole, delicious, nutrient packed meal per week complete with a rainbow of vegetables and fruit. Here are some of our favourite whole food wizards for inspiration:

Oh She Glows- the best Plant Based cookbook around.  OSG makes trying new recipes easy!  Buy her cookbook.  It's worth every penny (and it's only $20!!).

Thug Kitchen- we apologize in advance for the crude language on this website and in this cookbook, but we think it's hilarious.  If you want to smile, check out their promo video.  *If you are easily offended by swearing, don't watch it.  In short, we agree with their slogan- "Eat like you give a f*ck."

Minimalist Baker- easy to make recipes that require 10 ingredients or less.  *The source of the below Nachos!  Enough said.

These were as good as they look.  Recipe from Minimalist Baker- recipe links below.

Even while living a healthy lifestyle, you can still eat Nachos!! We LOVE nachos and we LOVE cheese!  But we wanted to try and make this just slightly heathier.  If you love queso sauce, you will love this plant based alternative.  Being “healthy” is not about cutting out everything you love.  It’s about finding better alternatives and simply eating more of what’s good for you and your body.

We will share more about this in future posts, but eating more plant based food is also good for the environment.  Have you seen Cowspiracy yet?  Check it out on Netflix.  Let us know what you think.

3. Learn something!

We all have at least one thing that we want to learn more about.  Perhaps it’s a new language, photography, outer space, how to swim, or learn more about the world!  Did you know that there are 196 countries in the world?  Can you name even 20 of them?  We tried... therefore we set out to learn at least one thing about every country in the world.  The Geography Now Youtube page has been helping us with this quest.  What will you learn this year?

4. Give back to something important to you.

Sharing links on Facebook does not count.  Although social media is a great platform to share causes that are important to you, actually doing some work yourself feels a lot better.  What kind of "legacy" do you want to leave behind?  How do you want to impact the world?  Perhaps you care about the environment and want to learn more about protecting wildlife and how you can get involved.  Maybe you want to see more children around the world with access to education.  Or, you can join up with us at Watered Down Apparel and help provide sustainable water sources to people around the world through our partner Water Is Life.  This year, we are also expanding into protecting fresh water and our aquatic ecosystems.

Start by learning about global issues that are important to you. Next, about how you can get involved with an organization that aims to impact that area.  If you can't find one, establish one!

5. STOP being so damn stressed.

Stop. Breath.  Think about what's truly important.  Things usually work out whether we stress about them or not.  If you are truly too busy and all the things on your plate are stressing you out, remove something.  If your stress is brought on by yourself, then you have the power to remove the stress.  If you cannot remove a stressor, then try and use our stress to fuel you for success.  If you are continually being stressed by the same things but haven't tried changing anything in your life, what are you doing?  Old ways won't open new doors.

If you need some everyday motivation, check out one of our favourites on Snapchat- DJ Khaled.  Username: djkhaled305

He will help you discover the keys to success and will tell you to create your own success by willing to work.  No one is going to do things for you.  Win more.  Major.  Oh and don't burn bridges unless you can walk on water.

Just do it.  Major key.

Just do it.  Major key.

Finally, do some yoga.  It is not some granola hippie activity.  It will do more for you then you can imagine.  Best option, hot yoga.  Sweat out the stress.

Happy 2016!!  Make this your most memorable, successful year yet!  You hold the keys to your success.  Make it happen.
